GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - With two outs in the
top of the fourth inning, the first contest of Green Bay's doubleheader softball
game against Loyola was suspended for one hour due to thunderstorms, which
included hail, lightning and rain.
After play resumed, Green Bay (15-19,
4-7 HL) was unable to overcome a 2-0 deficit before falling 9-0 and 4-0 to
Loyola (18-19, 11-6 HL) in its doubleheader Wednesday, April 18 at Ben Garot
Field.
GAME 1 - LOYOLA 9, GREEN BAY 0 -
With two outs in the bottom of the second
inning, Paige Newtols (Green Bay, Wis.) hit a single for the Phoenix and later
stole second base before being stranded at the close of the inning.
With one out in the top of the fourth,
Loyola hit an RBI double before adding an RBI single with two outs, putting two
runs on the board on three hits.
With two outs in the fifth, the Ramblers
hit an RBI single to center field for the 3-0 advantage.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth
and Amanda Omahen (San Diego, Calif.) on first, Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.)
hit a deep ball to center field for a stand-up double, advancing Omahen to
third. The Phoenix was unable to score in the inning, stranding two runners on
base.
Loyola scored six runs in the top of the
seventh inning off four hits and one error as the Phoenix was shut out 9-0 on
Loyola's 12 hits.
Green Bay registered three hits in the
contest while Allison Goecks (Beloit, Wis.) pitched six innings for the
Phoenix.
GAME 2 - LOYOLA 4, GREEN BAY 0 -
Loyola took a 2-0 lead in the third inning
of play off a home run to right field before retiring the side on defense in
the bottom of the inning.
Green Bay's first hit of the contest
came with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ashleigh Racer (Waterford,
Wis.) hit a single. Tia Collins (Orfordville, Wis.), who was pinch running for
Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.), advanced to third but was stranded on base
along with Newtols to close the inning.
Omahen registered Green Bay's final hit
of the game with a single to left field in the sixth inning before being
stranded on base.
Stacey Butts led off Green Bay's final
inning at the plate with a walk before stealing second and advancing to third
on a groundout by Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.). Newtols reached base after
being hit by a pitch but was later stranded to close the game.
Nannemann pitched a complete game for
the Phoenix.
The final game of the series between
Green Bay and Loyola is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Thursday, April 19 at Ben
Garot Field. The Phoenix hosts Cleveland State in a three-game series beginning
with a doubleheader Saturday, April 21 at 1:00 p.m.
