GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay (16-19,
5-7 HL) softball team scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning and
two in the bottom of the sixth, while holding off a late charge by Loyola (18-20,
11-7 HL) in the seventh inning for the 5-2 win Thursday, April 19 at Ben Garot
Field.
Brooke Andresen led off the game for Loyola
with a solo homerun to left field, giving the Ramblers the early 1-0 lead.
Green Bay senior Ashleigh Racer (Waterford,
Wis.) led off the bottom of the third inning with a single to shortstop before
Amanda Omahen (San Diego, Calif.) singled to center field. Danielle Peerenboom
(Appleton, Wis.) followed suit with a triple to left-center field scoring Racer
and Omahen to take the 2-1 lead. With two outs, Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.)
hit an RBI single to second base, scoring Peerenboom and boosting the Phoenix
lead to 3-1. Green Bay closed the inning with three runs on four hits and one
runner left on base.
With one out in the top of the fourth,
Loyola's Tarran Schaffer hit an RBI triple to center field, cutting the Phoenix
lead to 3-2. In the bottom of the inning, Green Bay's Shannon Butts
(Greenfield, Wis.) hit a line drive down the left field line for a double but
was later stranded on base.
With the tying run on third base, a 2-2
count and two outs in the sixth inning, Loyola's Olivia Bell hit a line drive
down the third base line. Third baseman Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) made a
diving catch for the final out, stranding the runner to save the tie.
Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) led off
the sixth inning with a double to left field before Shannon Butts reached base
on a fielder's choice. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Paige Newtols
(Green Bay, Wis.) hit a deep ball to the right field fence for an RBI triple,
scoring Butts from first. Ashleigh Racer (Waterford, Wis.) followed with an RBI
single to left field, scoring Newtols to boost the Phoenix lead to 5-2. Omahen
later loaded the bases with a single to left-center field before Peerenboom
reached on a fielder's choice. The Phoenix closed the inning scoring two runs
on five hits while stranding three runners on base.
With one out, Loyola's Brooke Andresen
singled to right field before Jessica Balzano advanced with a fielder's choice
followed by another single from the Ramblers. With the bases loaded and the
go-ahead run at the plate, Lauren Moore grounded into the double play in which
Racer tagged the runner before tossing to Stacey Butts at first, sealing the
win for the Phoenix.
Green Bay finished the contest with five
runs on 13 hits while Loyola had two runs on eight hits.
Pitcher Ashley Nannemann (Burlington,
Wis.) picked up her 10th win of the season while pitching her ninth complete
game from the mound for the Phoenix. Racer went 3-for-3 from behind the plate
with one RBI.
The Phoenix hosts Cleveland State in a
three-game series beginning with a doubleheader Saturday, April 21 at 1:00 and
3:00 p.m. before wrapping up the series Sunday, April 22 at 11:00 a.m. All
games will be played at Ben Garot Field.
