GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay (19-19, 8-7 HL) softball team closed its three-game series against Cleveland State (13-34, 5-10), sweeping the Vikings with a 4-1 win in the final game Sunday, April 22 at Ben Garot Field.

Green Bay scored two runs in the bottom of the opening inning when Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) hit an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Amanda Omahen (San Diego, Calif.) from first base for the 1-0 lead. Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) reached base on a fielder's choice before Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Reinke for the 2-0 advantage.

The Phoenix closed the first inning scoring two runs on one hit while stranding one runner on base.

Cleveland State responded with a solo homerun to left center field from Caila Ferro to cut the Phoenix lead to 2-1 with one out on the board. The Vikings followed with back to back singles before pitcher Alli Goecks (Beloit, Wis.) struck out the bottom of the order to strand two runners on base and close the inning.

Rivera led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to center field before Paige Newtols (Green Bay, Wis.) landed one in the same spot to put two runners on base. Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) earned a walk to load the bases for Ashleigh Racer (Waterford, Wis.) who bunted, scoring Tia Collins (Orfordville, Wis.) who was pinch running for Rivera, for the 3-1 lead. With two outs, Danielle Peerenboom (Appleton, Wis.) hit an RBI single to shortstop, scoring Newtols to boost the Phoenix lead to 4-1.

The Phoenix closed the fourth, scoring two runs on three hits while stranding three runners.

Green Bay's defense stranded five Cleveland State runners on base in the final three innings to seal the win. Goecks went the distance for the Phoenix, striking out five batters while allowing five hits. Peerenboom, Reinke, Rivera and Racer all posted RBIs for Green Bay.

In the series Rivera led the Phoenix with four hits on nine at-bats with one RBI while Omahen had three hits, including one double, one homerun and four RBIs.

Green Bay will continue Horizon League play Wednesday, April 25 as it travels to UIC (19-23, 6-7 HL) for a three-game series with the Flames. The series begins with a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday before wrapping up the series Thursday, April 26 at 1:00 p.m. at Flames Field in Chicago, Ill.
