GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay (19-19,
8-7 HL) softball team closed its three-game series against Cleveland
State (13-34, 5-10), sweeping the Vikings with a
4-1 win in the final game Sunday, April 22 at Ben Garot Field.
Green Bay scored two runs in the bottom of
the opening inning when Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) hit an RBI double down
the left field line, scoring Amanda Omahen (San Diego, Calif.) from first base
for the 1-0 lead. Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) reached base on a fielder's
choice before Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field,
scoring Reinke for the 2-0 advantage.
The Phoenix closed the first inning
scoring two runs on one hit while stranding one runner on base.
Cleveland State responded with a solo
homerun to left center field from Caila Ferro to cut the Phoenix lead to 2-1
with one out on the board. The Vikings followed with back to back singles
before pitcher Alli Goecks (Beloit, Wis.) struck out the bottom of the order to
strand two runners on base and close the inning.
Rivera led off the bottom of the fourth
with a single to center field before Paige Newtols (Green Bay, Wis.) landed one
in the same spot to put two runners on base. Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.)
earned a walk to load the bases for Ashleigh Racer (Waterford, Wis.) who
bunted, scoring Tia Collins (Orfordville, Wis.) who was pinch running for
Rivera, for the 3-1 lead. With two outs, Danielle Peerenboom (Appleton, Wis.)
hit an RBI single to shortstop, scoring Newtols to boost the Phoenix lead to
4-1.
The Phoenix closed the fourth, scoring
two runs on three hits while stranding three runners.
Green Bay's defense stranded five
Cleveland State runners on base in the final three innings to seal the win.
Goecks went the distance for the Phoenix, striking out five batters while
allowing five hits. Peerenboom, Reinke, Rivera and Racer all posted RBIs for
Green Bay.
In the series Rivera led the Phoenix
with four hits on nine at-bats with one RBI while Omahen had three hits, including
one double, one homerun and four RBIs.
Green Bay will continue Horizon League
play Wednesday, April 25 as it travels to UIC (19-23, 6-7 HL) for a three-game
series with the Flames. The series begins with a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday
before wrapping up the series Thursday, April 26 at 1:00 p.m. at Flames Field
in Chicago, Ill.
