GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The
Green Bay (2-4-1, 0-1 HL) men's soccer team was unable to overcome a 2-0
halftime deficit as it fell 3-0 to SIUE (6-2-0) Tuesday at Aldo Santaga
Stadium. It was the first home contest for the Phoenix since Aug. 31.
"We
came out flat and it's just frustrating to have the type of performance we did
in front of our great fans who came out in the cold to support us," said senior
goalkeeper Ryan Wehking (St. Louis, Mo.) who returned to the net for the
Phoenix after rehabbing an ankle injury suffered Aug. 31. "As a team captain, I
take responsibility for our performance and promise it won't happen again."
Green
Bay's first shot of the contest came off the foot of Ahmad Bah (Brooklyn Park,
Minn.) in the 19th minute but was high off the mark.
Two-and-a-half
minutes later, SIUE's Devon Newport took the first corner kick of the game. The
Cougars' Christian Volesky found Peter Kelly off the serve for the 1-0 header
goal.
Less
than two minutes later Kelly found Volesky for the 2-0 cushion.
In
the 31st minute, Green Bay's Whitney Browne (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) fired a shot
but SIUE goalie Kent Kobernus was there for the save. In the 36th minute,
Browne took Green Bay's final shot of the half but it was blocked, leaving the
Phoenix scoreless at the break.
SIUE
outshot the Phoenix 8-3 and 1-0 on corner kicks in the first half while Wehking
made three saves.
Green
Bay's closest look at the goal came in the 57th minute off a set play. Alonso
Flores (Chicago, Ill.) took the shot from the top of the box but miss two feet
to the left side of the net.
In
the 73rd minute, SIUE's Benny Jeffery found Volesky in the corner of the box
for the goal, sealing the 3-0 win over the Phoenix.
The
Cougars outshot the Phoenix 15-7 and 2-0 on corner kicks while Wehking tallied
five saves.
Green
Bay will have a quick turnaround as it heads west for the Oregon State
Tournament Sept. 21-23 where it will face Oregon State (Sept. 21) and Gonzaga
(Sept. 23). The Phoenix returns home to open Horizon League play Sept. 29
against Wright State at 7 p.m.
