CORVALLIS, Ore. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The
Green Bay (2-5-1, 0-1 HL) men'ssoccer team fell 6-1 to Oregon State (4-2-1) in
its opening contest of the Oregon State Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic Friday, Sept.
21 at Lorenz Field in Corvallis Ore.
Oregon
State struck early in the game, scoring goals in the first and 24th minutes to
take a 2-0 lead at the break.
The
Beavers added four more goals to take a 6-0 lead before Green Bay's Sebastian
Xiong (Cottage Grove, Wis.) scored a header goal off a corner kick from Jordan Dover (Ontario, Canada), putting the Phoenix on the board. The goal was Xiong's
first of the season and Dover's first assist.
Oregon
State outshot the Phoenix 20-12 and 4-2 on corner kicks in the contest with Sam Krenzien (Wauwatosa, Wis.) leading Green Bay with four shots while Whitney Browne (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Dover chipped in two shots each.
In
his second contest since Aug. 31, senior Goalkeeper Ryan Wehking (St. Louis,
Mo.) made six saves in the loss.
The
Phoenix will look to bounce back Sunday as it battles Gonzaga (2-3-0) Sunday at
11 a.m. CT wrapping up its play in the Oregon State Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic.
Green Bay returns home to Aldo Santaga Stadium Saturday, Sept. 29 as it hosts
Wright State in a Horizon League battle at 7 p.m.
