NIAGARA FIELD, N.Y. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After
a quick turnaround following an exciting double overtime win Friday against
Northern Illinois, the Green Bay (2-2-0) men's soccer team tied the contest 1-1
in the second half against Niagara but could not overcome the Purple Eagles,
falling 3-1 in the first of a four-game road trip Sunday, Sept. 2 at Nigara
Field, N.Y.
Eight
minutes into the contest, Niagara's Julian Ekeze found the back of the net for
the early 1-0 lead.
Green
Bay had two cornerkicks and two shots in the first half of action as sophomore
goalkeeper Max Nimmo (Janesville, Wis.) made his first collegiate career start
with the Phoenix, filling in for senior Ryan Wehking (St. Louis, Mo.) who is
out due to an injury.
In
the 71st minute, sophomore Kirby Allen (Appleton, Wis.) scored his team-high
third goal of the season. Allen's goal was unassisted and knotted the contest
1-1.
Niagara
answered in the 82nd minute when Micah Paulino found Bryan Da Cruz to give the
Purple Eagles the 2-1 advantage. With just over two minutes to play in the
contest, Niagara capitalized on a penalty kick to seal the 3-1 win.
Green
Bay finished the game with three cornerkicks while Ahmad Bah (Brooklyn Park,
Minn.) led all players with four shots while Allen chipped in three.
Nimmo
finished the contest with five saves for the Phoenix.
Green
Bay continues its four-game road trip with the Dayton Tournament Sept. 7-9. The
Phoenix faces the host Flyers Friday, Sept. 7 at 6:30 p.m. followed by Missouri
State Sunday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m.
