GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – After posting an unbeaten singles record in three matches over the weekend, Green Bay sophomore Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany) was selected as the Horizon League Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Monday for the period of Feb. 10-16. It marked the first such award in Gomez Islinger's career.
“I am very happy for Leo earning his first player of the week award,” Phoenix head coach Mark Thomas said. “Leo has really stepped up his game this year in both singles and doubles, which does not come as a surprise because he gives everything he has each day in practice. He is the ultimate competitor and a great team player. I am very proud of Leo for being a great representative of our team and our university.”
Gomez Islinger helped Green Bay to a 2-1 record in three matches away from home, winning all three of his singles contests in straight sets.
The Phoenix sophomore beat Western Michigan's Ruben Greiner 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles in Friday's tough 4-3 road loss to the Broncos, and then went on to pick up wins at the No. 2 spot in Green Bay's victories against IPFW (5-2) and at Toledo (6-1). He defeated the Mastodons' Jonathan Raa 6-1, 6-1 on Saturday and the Rockets' Stjepan Sisko 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday.
Gomez Islinger also collected a doubles win on the weekend, teaming up with Rowan Isaaks (London, England) for a 6-2 victory over IPFW's Raa and Connor Andrews at the No. 3 spot. It helped the Phoenix secure the doubles point en route to the 5-2 result.
The Green Bay men, now 8-4 overall, are back in action this Sunday, welcoming South Dakota State to Western Racquet and Fitness Cub for a 10 a.m. contest.
