GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Playing down a man for over 50 minutes of play, the Green Bay men's soccer team eventually fell 4-3 to DePaul in overtime on Monday afternoon, despite a valiant effort and three second half goals at Santaga Stadium.
Green Bay (1-1-0) saw goalkeeper Dani Alvarado (Leander, Texas) get handed a red card after he came off his line to prevent a goal in a one-on-one play, tackling the DePaul player just outside the top of the box. The Phoenix would have to play with 10 men for the remainder of the game, which led to DePaul scoring three goals following the ejection and four total.
The Blue Demons (1-1-0) scored the first goal of the game in the 5th minute on a header, then made the score 2-0 following the free-kick goal that followed the red card in the 41st minute.
Trailing 2-0, the Phoenix would go on to score three goals in a span of 27 minutes, with the first coming off the foot of Audi Jepson (Green Bay, Wis.) in the 56th minute. A free kick started the goal, when Trey Benhart (Lakeville, Minn.) sent the ball into the box and James Pendrigh (Canterburty, New Zealand) knocked it down to Jepson, who buried it.
Jepson would have a significant impact on the next two goals, setting Jordan Dover (Ajax, Ontario) up for back-to-back scores by the junior. Dover's first goal couldn't have been easier, thanks to Jepson maneuvering through the defense and centering it to Dover perfectly in the 68th minute.
Dover would give Green Bay its first lead of the game in the 83rd minute, and it was the penalty-kick save by GB goalkeeper Kyle Ihn (Wales, Wis.) that kick started it all. Ihn saved the PK to keep the score tied, then played the ball on the counter attack quickly that eventually led to Dover scoring by way of Jepson and Cheenuj Shong (Milwaukee, Wis.) linking up.
Despite the momentum in Green Bay's favor courtesy of Dover, DePaul would tie the game in the 87th minute and eventually notch the game-winner in the 93rd minute during the first overtime.
The contest was played a very intense level, as 27 total fouls were called and five cards were handed out.
The Phoenix will now hit the road for the first time in 2014 visiting Drake on Friday (Sept. 5) and Western Illinois on Sunday (Sept. 7). Kick off for Friday's match is set for 7 p.m.
