Softball Splits Twinbill at Northern Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Visiting Green Bay (2-2) used strong pitching and a solo home run to post a shutout 1-0 win in its opener on Saturday evening and split a twinbill at Northern Iowa. The Phoenix battled in a slugfest in game two against the Panthers, but fell in a 15-11 result.

Green Bay 1, Northern Iowa 0

Jaclyn DeLagrange (New Havin, Ind.) hit a solo home run in the second inning and it held up as Briana Cavin (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) and Heather Sanderson (Rapid River, Mich.) combined on a three-hit shutout in the opening game. Cavin gave up only three hits in five and one-third innings, and Sanderson earned the save by working 1.2 hitless innings in relief.

Cavin struck out five batters in her start to improve to 1-1 on the season. Junior Alyssa Johnson (Elmhurst, Ill.) went 3-for-3 from the plate and sophomore Abby Brinkmeier (Eagan, Minn.) added two hits to lead the Phoenix offense.

Northern Iowa 15, Green Bay 11 (8 Innings)

Green Bay tallied 19 hits in the second game of the twinbill with eight players recording at least one hit. After falling behind 2-0, Green Bay took a 6-3 with three runs in the third and fourth innings.

Northern Iowa went in front 10-8 in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Green Bay responded in the top of the seventh. The Phoenix plated a run and then watched Johnson give the Phoenix the 11-10 lead with a two-run shot.

Unfortunately, the Panthers scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the final four on a walk-off grand slam from Samantha Nicholson.

Katelyn Huemmer (Sun Prairie, Wis.) finished 4-of-5 for the Phoenix with a home run and two runs scored, Brinkmeieier had three hits in five at-bats with a home run, three runs scored and four RBI, and Johnson added three hits including her key home run.

Green Bay finishes the action in the UNI Dome Classic on Sunday at 10 a.m., playing Iowa.
