GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team (11-17, 4-5) kicked off a three-game series against Wright State (12-24, 7-2) this afternoon, battling the preseason favorites and current league leaders at Phoenix Field. The game did not end in favor of the Phoenix, with Green Bay falling to the Raiders 8-3 in the weekend opener.
Wright State 8, Green Bay 3
The Phoenix was on the board first after a mishap in the second inning by Wright State's left fielder that allowed Green Bay to bring in Allie Taylor and Katelyn Huemmer from second and third.
The Phoenix lead was erased in the following inning when Wright State's Gorman belted a home run over the center field fence with a runner on, knotting things up at two runs each. The Raiders would go on to take control of the game in the same inning after adding two additional tallies in the run column to lead things 4-2 heading into the fourth.
The fourth inning saw Green Bay come within one run of the Raiders after Allie Hislope reached base on a walk and Taylor hit a single into center to score Alexis Otto, who was pinch running for Hislope, from second base.
Wright State would add one run in the sixth and three runs in the seventh to best Green Bay 8-3 in game one of the weekend series.
Briana Cavin (3-9) received the start for Green Bay and spent four innings, allowing six hits, five runs and fanning five batters.
Green Bay returns to action tomorrow afternoon at Phoenix Field, hosting a doubleheader against the Raiders with games slated for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
