Green Bay Splits Doubleheader with League-Leading Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team (14-21, 6-8) continued its weekend series in Rochester, Mich., against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies this afternoon, splitting victories the Horizon League leaders. The first game was controlled by Green Bay, as the Phoenix took the lead in the third inning and never looked back, defeating the Golden Grizzlies 6-4. The second game would end in favor of Oakland after the Golden Grizzlies jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, and the Phoenix was unable to deplete the deficit, falling 5-2 in the weekend finale.

Green Bay 6, Oakland 4

Oakland was on the board first in game one, scoring one run in the first inning after Oakland's Kisman led the game off with a walk and later scored on an RBI double to right-center from Cupp.

Both teams were scoreless in second inning, but Green Bay took control of the contest in the third inning after plating five runs to lead things 5-1. The five-run inning was strung together after six hits from the Phoenix team, with the highlight being a bases-clearing triple from Allie Hislope that allowed Katelyn Huemmer, Abby Brinkmeier and Hailee Frey to cross home plate.

The Golden Grizzles lowered the deficit to three runs in the fourth inning after a lead-off triple from Cupp who was brought home by a sacrifice fly to center field from Johnson.

The fifth inning would see no one cross home plate from either team, as Green Bay and Oakland would both turn in three up, three down offensive series.

The top of the sixth would see Green Bay increase its run tally to six after Kelli Hutchinson was brought home by a Brinkmeier single to center field. However, Oakland would answer in the bottom of the inning by plating two runs on back-to-back RBI hits from Johnson and Morales to lower the defict to two runs heading into the final inning of play.

Green Bay's defense would hold strong with the help of Hailey McDermott, who was brought in to relieve Briana Cavin, and did not allow the Golden Grizzlies to bring anyone home.

Cavin was credited with the 6-4 victory over the Golden Grizzlies after spending 6.1 innings in the circle, allowing six hits and fanning four batters.

Brinkmeier had a strong showing at the plate in game one, going three-for-four and picking up a pair of RBIs for the Phoenix.

Oakland 5, Green Bay 2

The first inning was scoreless for both teams, with the first offensive action being turned in by the Golden Grizzlies in the second inning. Oakland broke the game open in the second, plating four runs to jump out and take and early 4-0 advantage.

The Phoenix wasted no time responding to the 4-0 deficit, getting things rolling in the third after an RBI double from Mohrfeld that saw Alyssa Johnson come around from first to touch home. The next Phoenix run was scored on the following play, a Hutchinson single that brought Mohrfeld in from second to pull the Phoenix within two runs.

The Golden Grizzlies went on to add one run in the bottom of the inning to lead things 5-2 with four innings left to play.

Neither team was able to get any runs on the board the remainder of the game, resulting in a 5-2 victory for the league-leading Golden Grizzlies.

Heather Sanderson and Cavin split the work in the circle for the Phoenix, with each of the pitchers spending three innings in the circle. Sanderson allowed three hits and five runs, while Cavin allowed a lowly one hit and fanned one batter.

The next Phoenix outing will be on Friday, April 24 when the team travels to Youngstown, Ohio, to face Youngstown State for a three-game Horizon League series.
