YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball (16-22, 8-9 HL) wrapped up its weekend with game three of the weekend league series against Youngstown State (16-27, 7-10 HL). The Phoenix broke the game open early in the contest and was able to hold off the Penguins to secure a 7-3 victory.

Green Bay was able to get on the board early in the contest, plating one run in the second off of an Alyssa Johnson home run. The Phoenix held the Penguins scoreless in the bottom of the second and got the offense rolling in the top of the third, scoring four runs after an Allie Taylor single that brought home Hailey Mohrfeld and a three-RBI home run from Miranda Spangberg.
Youngstown State was able to get on the board in the bottom of the third, scoring one run off of a lead-off home run from Dowd.
Both teams were unable to bring anyone home in the fourth, leaving the score at 5-1. However, Green Bay managed to add two insurance runs in the fifth inning to increase its lead to six runs.
The penguins plated one run in both the fifth and seventh inning to bring the final score to 7-3, ensuring the Phoenix victory and series win.
Heather Sanderson was in the circle for the Phoenix and put in six innings of work. She allowed nine hits, two runs and struck out three batters in the contest. The win marked Sanderson's second of the weekend and seventh of the year.
Mohrfeld capped off a phenomenal performance by going 2-for-3 at the plate, giving her nine total hits in 12 at-bats on the weekend.
The Phoenix has a short break from competition, as the team travels to Ames, Iowa for a doubleheader against Iowa State on Tuesday afternoon with the first game slated for 2 p.m.
