Green Bay Falls Short Against No. 1 Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) –Green Bay continued play in the Horizon League Tournament this afternoon, taking on host and No. 1 seeded Oakland. The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to an early lead in the contest, forcing the Phoenix to respond with a five-run sixth inning to tie things up. Oakland went on to add one run in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead and held the Phoenix off in the seventh for a 6-5 victory.

Oakland 6, Green Bay 5

Oakland was able to get things going early in the contest, plating one run in the first inning to lead things.

Oakland would hold Green Bay scoreless for the first five innings, amassing five runs in the process. Oakland helped build its five-run lead by scoring three runs in the third inning off of a two-RBI triple from Hartley and a sac fly from Cupp that plated Hartley on the next at-bat.

Green Bay's five-running inning came in the sixth. The inning started with back-to-back walks from Katelyn Huemmer and Abby Brinkmeier, followed by an Allie Taylor single to load the bases. With the bases loaded, Green Bay's Jaclyn Delagrange was able to reach on a fielder's choice and bring a run home. Ashley Baker took the next plate appearance for Green Bay and tagged a ball down the left field line that was too much for the third baseman to handle, allowing an additional two Phoenix runs to score. A similar event occurred in Alyssa Johnson's at-bat, with Johnson hitting a hard fly ball to center field that the outfielder was unable to pull in, plating two more Phoenix base runners to knot things up at five.

The tie would not last long, as Oakland would go on to add one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead things 6-5 with one inning to play.

Green Bay was unable to get the bats going in the final inning, falling to the host and No. 1 seeded Golden Grizzlies 6-5.

The Phoenix softball team will return to action tomorrow morning, slated for a game against the winner of game six (No. 3 seed Wright State vs. No. 5 seed Valparaiso at 11 a.m. (CT). The loser of the contest will be headed home, and the winner will be advancing to game nine at 4 p.m.

Heather Sanderson received the nod and spent five innings in the circle for Green Bay, allowing seven hits, five runs and fanning one batter in the contest.
