PHOENIX, Ariz. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – An early strike from the Grand Canyon's Niki Jackson in the 36th minute found the Phoenix trailing for the first time in regulation this season. Green Bay continued to apply pressure throughout the match but was unable to turn in the needed equalizer to force extra time, falling 1-0 at GCU Soccer Field.
The Phoenix managed to apply pressure to the Antelopes' backline in the first half, recording four shots on-goal in the first 45 minutes and only allowing one. However, Grand Canyon did not let its striking chance go to waste in the 36th minute, firing one past Phoenix keeper Kyle Ihn to hand Green Bay its first regulation deficit.
The second half saw numerous scoring attempts from both teams, with Green Bay's best chances coming in the final minutes of the contest. The Phoenix nearly knotted things up in the closing seconds of the match, as Yasin Abdulgasem centered the ball and used his left foot to fire just wide of the net with 40 seconds remaining in regulation.
The Phoenix outshot the Antelopes 14-11, with both teams recording four shots on the mark in the contest. Green Bay also dominated the corner kick category, taking 10 on the night and only allowing the Antelopes one.
The Phoenix was able to attack from multiple angles in the match, with each one of its four shots-on-goal coming from a different member of the squad.
Green Bay will now turn its focus to its matchup this Sunday against Incarnate Word at 2 p.m. at GCU Soccer Field.
