Green Bay Falls to Drake, UNI in Second Day of UNI-Dome Classic

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team continued play at the UNI-Dome classic this evening, taking the diamond against Drake and tournament-host UNI. The Phoenix dropped a nail-biter to the Bulldogs (2-1) to open the day, 6-5, followed by a loss to Panthers (1-2), 14-0.

Drake 6, Green Bay 5

Senior Kelli Hutchinson led things off for the Phoenix with a double to give Green Bay a runner in scoring position with no outs. After the next two batters were retired, Allie Taylor stepped up to the plate and turned in a double of her own to bring Hutchinson around to score and put Green Bay on top, 1-0.

The Phoenix held the advantage until the third inning, when Drake managed to bring in a pair of runs after back-to-back doubles brought the Bulldogs' Frank and Chambers around to touch home.

Trailing by one, the Phoenix waited until the fifth inning to take command of the game, scoring four runs in the inning off of four hits and a Bulldog error. Hutchinson collected the first RBI of the inning by sending a double into left-center to plate Beyer. Taylor hit a sacrifice-fly to right, allowing Hutchinson to touch home, and Acacia Tupa singled up the middle to plate Katelyn Huemmer and Abby Brinkmeier.

Drake managed to bring two runs around in the bottom of the seventh to come from behind and defeat the Phoenix 6-5, handing Green Bay its first loss of the season.

UNI 14, Green Bay 0 (Five Innings)

UNI took control of the game in the opening inning, plating six runs to jump out to a commanding lead. The Bulldogs were fortuned the six runs in the opening inning while only collecting a single hit. Drake continued its scoring barrage in the second inning, batting around and collecting six hits to bring eight runs to the plate.

Green Bay was unable to convert baserunners into run in its second game of the day but did manage to amass three hits against a strong Panthers team in five innings played.

The Phoenix will return to the diamond bright and early tomorrow, taking on Big Ten opponent Nebraska. First pitch against the Cornhuskers will be at 8 a.m. at the UNI-Dome Classic.
