DAYTON, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team (9-20, 0-1 HL) opened the Horizon League regular season on Friday afternoon, falling to Wright State, 7-0, at WSU Softball Field in Dayton, Ohio. Both teams will return to the diamond on Saturday to play a doubleheader at noon and 2 p.m.
Wright State 7, Green Bay 0
Raiders' second baseman Libby Pfeffer plated the game's first two runs in the second and the fourth, scoring third baseman Hanna Floyd twice on a RBI single and a safety squeeze, respectively, to give Wright State a 2-0 advantage.
WSU (13-13, 1-0 HL) broke the game open by scoring five runs in the fifth — all of which came with two outs in the inning. After a double and a walk, Raiders' shortstop Becka Peterson sent a 1-0 offering over the head of Green Bay center fielder Katelyn Huemmer for a two-RBI double. Two batters later, Wright State left fielder Macey Gunther capped the scoring with a 3-run home run to left center.
The Phoenix recorded its first two hits in the top of the sixth, as both Alanna Beyer and Abby Brinkmeier tallied singles; however, Green Bay failed to score after Beyer was thrown out at the plate with two down.
WSU starter Ashley Sharp (6-5) was extremely sharp on the afternoon, allowing just two hits in 7.0 innings while striking out six. The Phoenix's Bailey Smaney (5-5) also went the distance, walking one.
