Green Bay Falls to UAB, Tennessee on Day Two of Tennessee Invite

By Patrick Stumpf

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team returned to the diamond for the second day of the Tennessee Invitational on Saturday, falling to both the UAB Blazers, 5-1, and the No. 16-ranked Tennessee Volunteers, 13-1 (F/5).

Green Bay (4-10) will conclude round-robin tournament play tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., when it once again matches up with UAB (6-15). Fans can follow along with LIVE STATS here.

UAB 5, Green Bay 1

The Blazers plated four of its five runs across in the first inning, the first coming on a two-out RBI single from junior Mary Warren to take a 1-0 lead. Moments later, senior Ashley Johnson cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right to give UAB a 4-0 advantage. The Blazers tacked on another run in the third inning on another two-out hit by Danii Fernandez which made it 5-0.

Green Bay appeared poised to put its first runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning, as both Allie Hislope and Abby Brinkmeier reach via walk. However, UAB junior Cara Goodwin was able to navigate out of it unscathed.

Both teams put up zeros until the seventh, when Goodwin entered the inning with a no-hitter still intact. It didn't last long any longer though, as junior Allie Taylor deposited the first pitch of the frame deep to left field for her team-leading third home run of the season. Brennan Engel and Katelyn Huemmer followed up the home run with back-to-back singles, but Goodwin struck out two of her 13 batters on the day, then got Alyssa Johnson to pop out to first to end it.

Appearing in her third game in three days, Phoenix freshman starter Tessa Mikkelson pitched a complete game (7.0 IP, 5 ER), while recording her first collegiate strikeout to lead-off the fifth inning.

Tennessee 13, Green Bay 1 (Five Innings)

Green Bay got into the hit column in the opening inning on a two-out single by Allie Taylor; however, the Volunteers would hold the Phoenix hitless over the next two-plus.

Tennessee scored eight runs on five hits in the bottom of the second – capped off on a two-run home run by designated hitter Gretchen Aucoin – which made it 8-0 Volunteers. The hosts plated five more runs over the next two innings to extend their lead to 13-0.

The Phoenix got on the board in the top half of the fourth when an RBI double by Alanna Beyer scored Alexis Otto, but that's all it would get.
