DETROIT, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team concluded its weekend road trip in Detroit in style on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep of the Titans, 4-2, at Buysse Ballpark.
The Phoenix (13-23, 4-4 HL) are now winners of four-straight games for the first time since it tallied seven consecutive victories from April 24 - May 3, 2014 under Jean Rivett.
Green Bay 4, Detroit 2
The Phoenix opened the scoring in the top of the first, as left fielder Abby Brinkmeier lead off with a double against Detroit's Christa McGahuey. Two batters later, Brinkmeier was brought around on a RBI single by Allie Taylor, which added to her team-leading 21stRBIs.
McGahuey put the Titans ahead in the third, 3-2, after hitting a two-run home run off Phoenix starter Bailey Smaney. However, that lead would prove to be short-lived, as right fielder Acacia Tupa answered with a two-run bomb of her own in the fifth that ultimately kept Green Bay ahead for good.
Senior Alyssa Johnson tacked on a key insurance run on a solo home run in the sixth, and that's all Smaney needed, as the freshman from Green Bay went the distance (7 IP, 2 ER) for the second time in as many days to even her record at 7-7.
The Phoenix will play its first home games of the season this upcoming week against both UIC (26-12, 12-2 HL) and Youngstown State (21-16, 8-5 HL). First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for noon from Phoenix Field.
