HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team (18-29, 9-8 HL) put together a complete performance on Saturday morning against Northern Kentucky (12-38, 4-16 HL), coupling dominant pitching while outhitting the Norse 13-2 to earn a series-clinching victory, 8-1, at Frank Ignatius Grein Field.
Starting pitcher Katie Rossmann was nearly perfect through 4 2/3 innings to earn the win – allowing just one hit – while Hailee Frey (3-for-4) and Jenna Smarzinski (2-for-3) combined for five hits and five RBI to pace the Phoenix offense.
Green Bay opened the scoring in the second, scoring twice on an RBI walk by Smarzinski, followed by a fielding error by NKU starter Jordan Harbacek which allowed Brennan Engel to score.
In the third, Phoenix right fielder Acacia Tupa lead-off the inning by connecting on her fifth home run of the season, and four batters later, Smarzinski drove in Allie Taylor on a RBI double to center to give Green Bay a 4-0 lead.
Head coach Beth Spoehr's squad went on to add single tallies in the fourth, sixth and two in the seventh.
The Phoenix will return home on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Oakland (11-26, 6-9 HL), part of a weather make-up from earlier this month. First pitch from Phoenix Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
