Green Bay Falls on Second Day of Red & Black Tournament

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) –  The Green Bay softball team took the diamond for the second day in the Red & Black Tournament in Louisville, Ky., Saturday, dropping the first game of the day to Indiana State, 4-0, and losing a nail biter to Louisville, 4-3.

Green Bay (1-8) was able to keep Indiana State (7-6) from touching home through the first five innings, but the sixth inning saw the Sycamores plate four runs off of four hits. Indiana State's Martin hit an inside-the-park home run to right center to hand the Phoenix its first deficit of the day.

Green Bay had a chance to rally in the seventh inning, working with a pair of baserunners after back-to-back singles from Alexis Otto and Hailee Frey but was never able to bring anyone around to score, falling to Indiana State 4-0 in the first game of the day.

In a rematch of yesterday's 8-0 Louisville (12-6) victory, the Phoenix came ready to play and had no plans to fall behind early, jumping out to a 1-0 lead after Abby Brinkmeier got things rolling with a double to left field and was able to come around and score after Allie Taylor singled to left.

Louisville responded with one run in the bottom of the first and later took the lead with another run in the third. In the sixth inning, the Cardinals put Green Bay at a 4-1 disadvantage after plating two.

Brinkmeier was able to collect a lead-off walk and Chyanne Onstad singled through the left side to give the Phoenix two baserunners with no outs. The rally continued later after Onstad and Brinkmeier scored on a Louisville throwing error. Louisville was able to hold the Phoenix off by striking out the next two batter to pick up a 4-3 win.

Green Bay will take the diamond at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning in its tournament finale against Bowling Green.
