Green Bay Topped by Wright State in Saturday Doubleheader

DE PERE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team hosted Wright State at the Mel Nicks Sports Complex in De Pere, Wis., on Saturday afternoon, dropping its first two conference games of the season to the Raiders, 2-1 and 8-3.

Wright State 2, Green Bay 1

In a game that saw a total of 18 hits, only three runs managed to touch home plate between both squads. Wright State (8-16, 3-2) got things rolling in the first inning with one run after three-straight singles, one of which brought in Macey Gunther from third base.

Wright State went on to add another run in the fourth inning to put Green Bay (1-15, 0-2) at a 2-0 disadvantage with three innings to play. The Phoenix added a single run in the fifth when Hailee Frey touched home after a Chyanne Onstad double.

Both teams were held scoreless in the final two innings as Wright State went on to defeat Green Bay, 2-1. Katie Rossmann spent all seven innings in the circle for Green Bay, allowing 10 hits and two earned runs.

Wright State 8, Green Bay 3

The Phoenix was able to get on the board first in the second game of the doubleheader, plating one run in the first inning of play after Frey reached on a double to center and touched home on the next at-bat - an Abby Brinkmeier single to right field.

The Raiders plated a pair in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead over Green Bay and went on to add two more in the fifth to build its lead up to three runs (4-1) and needing only nine outs to close out the game. The Phoenix made it clear in the bottom of the fifth it had no intentions of going away quietly and scored two runs off a two-RBI single from Allie Taylor which pulled Green Bay within one.

The Raiders added four runs in the final two innings and kept Green Bay off the board to seal an 8-3 victory. Wright State totaled 14 hits in game two of the doubleheader while the Phoenix was limited to six. Green Bay also had four defensive errors compared to Wright State's two.

Work from the circle in Green Bay's final game of the day was split by Sinead Korvela (4.2 IP) and Rossmann (2.1 IP). Ashley Sharp pitched all seven innings for the Raiders, allowing six hits, three runs and collecting six strikeouts.

Green Bay returns to the diamond tomorrow afternoon to close out the weekend series with Wright State at 11 a.m.
