ISHPEMING, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay Nordic Skiing team opened the 2018-19 slate this weekend at the NMU Open in Ishpeming, Michigan at the Al Quaal Recreation Area. On Saturday, the men competed in the 10K freestyle, while the women participated in the 5K freestyle race. On Sunday, the men's team took on the 15K classic, and the women faced the 10K classic. The meet was unscored.

In both of the men's races, Jake Ajax was the top finisher for the Phoenix. In Saturday's 10K, the redshirt senior finished 12th with a time of 27:15.5 amidst a pack of Michigan Tech competitors, while in the 15K on Sunday, he stopped the clock at 44:54.7, good for 12th overall once again.
 
In the 10K freestyle, redshirt sophomore Tom Woolhouse was the next Green Bay skier to cross the finish line, taking 18th place in 27:53.1, while redshirt junior Quinn Duffy was only three seconds behind to earn 20th and round out the top three. Duffy made another appearance in the top three for the Phoenix during the 15K classic, claiming another 20th place in 47:08.1, while sophomore Shad Kraftson was eight seconds and one place behind him.
 
Similarly, a Phoenix from the women's team led both races this weekend. On Saturday, redshirt sophomore Sadie Peterson placed 9th with a time of 15:16.4 in the 5K, while in Sunday's 10K she claimed 8th with 36:12.9, holding off a Northern Michigan foe by just two seconds.
 
Junior Oda Karlsen Bekkestad finished in 11th place in the 5K freestyle, posting a time of 16:19.1, while redshirt sophomore Maria Schoening took 13th with a time of 16:51.1. Redshirt senior Maddie McKeefry moved into the second slot on the Green Bay roster the next day in the 10K classic, crossing the line at 37:45.3 for 15th. Bekkestad was just one place and 20 seconds behind to sum up the top three.
 
The Nordic Ski team will travel to Michigan again this upcoming weekend, as they head to Houghton for the MTU XCX Cup. The Phoenix will compete on both Saturday, Dec. 15 and Sunday, Dec. 16.
