Ryan Thieme Leads Phoenix at CCSA Conference Championships

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Green Bay Nordic Ski team was back in action this past weekend at the CCSA Conference Championships in Houghton, Mich. at the Tech Trials. The Phoenix finished fourth on both days, finishing with 117 total points on the weekend.
 
The event started with the 20K Freestyle Mass Start on Saturday. The men were led by a career-best 7th-place finish from Ryan Thieme in 57:26.4, a 14th-place finishing time of 59:37.5 for Noah Erickson and a 17th-place finish in 1:00:20 for CJ Young. Additionally finishing in the top 20 with a time of 1:01:13 was Zaine Braaten, who also registered a personal best.
 
On the women's side, GB was led by a 16th-place from Lilly Franzen, who crossed the finish line in 1:09:4. Behind Franzen was a 21st-place finish from Grace Nemeth, who finished with a time of 1:11:33, and  Hedda Samuelsson, who had a 22nd place result with a time of 1:12:12. Close behind their teammates in 23rd and 25th place were Silje Busklein (1:12:18), and Chelsey Johnson (1:21:26).
 
The weekend was wrapped up with the 7.5K Classic Individual Start, paced by a 17th place finish from Noah Erickson with a time of 24:38.4 on the men's side. That was followed by Ryan Thieme's 21st-place time of 24:55. CJ Young posted third for GB once again, finishing in 24th place with a time of 25:39.4, just ahead of his two teammates Derek Waddick in 25th (25:43.4), and Myles Brown in 26th (25:44.5).
 
Hedda Samuelsson led the women on Sunday, crossing the finish line in 29:28.6 for a 16th-place finish. Lilly Franzen was the second Phoenix to finish in the top 20, coming in 20th place with her time of 29:48.7. Grace Nemeth rounded out the GB top three with a 26th-place finish and a time of 31:20.7, just one spot ahead of her teammate Silje Busklein in 27th place (31:26.9).
 
Green Bay will hit the slopes on the big stage this weekend when they compete in the NCAA Central Regional Skiing Championships in Ishpeming, Michigan at Al Quaal. The weekend will begin with the 7.5K Classic Individual Start on Saturday and will conclude with the 20K Freestyle Mass Start on Sunday.
