Phoenix Ski Opens Season At American Birkebeiner

CABLE, Wis. – The Green Bay Nordic Skiing returned to trails for the first time in the 2024-25 season this past weekend at the US Supertour in Cable, Wis. at the American Birkebeiner. The Phoenix competed in the Classic Sprint on Saturday and the 10K Freestyle Individual Start on Sunday.

CLASSIC SPRINT
Hedda Samuelsson led the Phoenix women Saturday morning with a 31st place finish with a 3:54.11. Her 31st-place finish means she came up just short of qualifying for the Open Quarterfinals. Silje Buskelin was just behind her, finishing 41st with a 3:57.85. Lilly Franzen finished 55th but qualified for the juniors heat where she eventually finished sixth with a time of 4:16.5.

Ryan Thieme led Green Bay on the men's side, finishing 45th. Grant Rocheleau and CJ Young rounded out the top three for GB with 66th and 69th place finishes respectively.

10K FREESTYLE INDIVIDUAL START
On the women's side, the same three rounded filled out the top three for the Phoenix. Franzen finished in 34th with a final time of 29:14.9, while Hedda Samuelsson finished 37th, and Silje Busklein finished 49th.

Ryan Thieme once again led the Phoenix men on Sunday, finishing the 10K in 23:51.2 for a 49th-place finish. Myles Brown came in 66th and CJ Young finished 70th.

UP NEXT
The Phoenix will be off until after the new year, heading to Anchorage, Alaska for US Skiing Nationals from Jan. 2-7. The races will take place at Kincaid Park.
