RHINELANDER, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) ---The Green Bay Nordic skiing team hosted their very own CCSA race this weekend in Rhinelander, taking on a classic mass start on Saturday and skate individual start on Sunday in frigid temperatures. The women's team resulted in a second place overall finish, while the men earned third place as a team.
Â
The women were led by
Sadie Peterson in the 10K classic mass start on the first day, as the redshirt sophomore raced her way to fifth place overall, finishing less than a tenth of a second ahead from a Saint Scholastica opponent with a time of 33:51.65. Redshirt senior
Maddie McKeefry was just outside the top ten, stopping the clock at 34:40.74, while junior Oda Karlsen Bekkestad crossed the line in 21st place at 36:59.13 to round out the top three.
Â
The men had 15 kilometers to trek through in their mass start, and most of the team finished relatively close by each other, like a pack. Redshirt senior
Jake Ajax was the top Phoenix, coming in 15th with a time of 44:10.35, while redshirt sophomore
Tom Woolhouse was right behind in 16th, finishing at 44:30.36. Sophomore
Shad Kraftson took 19th, clocking in at 44:43.58 as the third Green Bay competitor.
Â
The second day was even better place-wise for Peterson, who made the podium in the 5K skate individual start by a sizeable amount of time. She put up a time of 15:29.63 to claim third place, coming in only three seconds behind second place, but nearly a minute ahead of fourth. The following two Phoenix were also within the top ten: redshirt sophomore
Maria Schoening earned 8th with a time of 16:41.96 and a reliable Bekkestad received 10th in 16:48.39.
Â
The men's event was a 10K skate, and again, Green Bay proved its consistency by finishing three in a row. Like the day previous, Ajax was ahead, completing the race in 27:48.97 for 15th, and this time redshirt sophomore
Sam Myers was right nearby in 16th, collecting a time of 27:54.63. Woolhouse completed the trio, placing 17th with a time of 28:05.88.
Â
The Green Bay Nordic Ski team will have one more CCSA race next weekend, this time being hosted by Northern Michigan at the Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming, Michigan. The Phoenix will compete in an individual skate on Saturday, February 2nd and a mass classic on Sunday, February 3rd.
