No. 23 Purdue Pulls Away From Green Bay in Second Half

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Playing in front of a packed Mackey Arena crowd on opening night, Green Bay fell 79-57 at 23rd-ranked Purdue on Wednesday night. The Phoenix (0-1) trailed by only 12 at 61-49 with 6:30 to play, but a 10-0 Purdue (1-0) run put the game away for good in head coach Linc Darner's return to his alma mater.

The Boilermakers jumped out to a 14-2 lead right out of the gate, before the game went back and forth into the half. GB found its rhythm from beyond the arc in the second half, making 7 of its 14 3-point attempts after going 0-for-6 in the first half.

Amari Davis was impressive in his first collegiate game, scoring 10 points on 5-for-9 shooting. The freshman finished strong at the rim and showed the ability to knock down the mid-range jump shot. He was the bright spot for a cold shooting team in the first half.

Two other players scored in double figures for GB, led by Kameron Hankerson's 14 points on a pair of triples. JayQuan McCloud added 10 points in just over 31 minutes of action. PJ Pipes also hit two 3s in the second half, also playing some great on the ball defense.

Darner coached his first official game at Purdue, since graduating from the University in 1995. He played his final season for the Boilermakers in the 1993-94 season, helping that team win the B10 championship and advance to the Elite Eight. Darner received a great round of applause before the game, after a special welcome before lineups.

Green Bay will play its home-opener on Saturday, Nov. 9, back at the Kress Center. The Phoenix will welcome UW-Stout for a 6 p.m. tip for Bud Light Night.
