GREEN BAY'S LAST TIME OUT
The Phoenix opened up Horizon League play at Northern Kentucky, splitting the four-game set with the Norse. GB fell 1-0 in game one and bounced back to win 1-0 in game two behind a dominant pitching performance from Brittany Baneck. Baneck went 10 shutout innings, with the game going to extras, and earned yet another complete game shutout. Sunday's games were another pair of one-run outings, with GB falling in game one and winning 4-3 in game two. With the series split, GB is off to its best start since 2014 at 7-5 on the season.

HOME AT LAST
It's been four years since Green Bay played a home softball game on campus, with the field undergoing renovations and inclement weather playing a factor during that time. GB did play "home" games at St. Norbert and Circle Tap in Denmark in 2018, but never at its own stadium. The new King Park sits where the previous home field set before, which now includes a full synthetic turf field, batting cages, bullpen and press box. It now serves as the only full turf field in the Horizon League and with a state of the art drainage system will allow GB to avoid the weather issues it once had. More updates to the park, including lights, windscreens and branding and other items are still to be added down the road. Each of those items are expected to be in place by fall 2021.

PITCHING PROWESS
The Phoenix pitching staff has been lights out this season, boasting a team ERA of 2.61, which ranks second in the Horizon League behind Robert Morris at 2.59. Opponents are hitting just .234 against GB, which also ranks second in the HL. Individually, Baneck owns a 1.27 ERA with opponents hitting just .167 against. She now has two complete game shutouts, the only player in the HL with multiple CG shutouts. Kayla Schwebke has also been impressive, owning a 2.45 ERA with a 4-2 record. She was a tough-luck loser this past weekend, allowing just one run but falling 1-0 as a team in the league-opener.

SCOUTING RMU
The Colonials own an identical record to GB, sitting at 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the Horizon League. RMU split last weekend at home against Detroit Mercy, and leads the league in team ERA with a 2.59. Natalie Higgins leads the lineup with a .419 batting average and 15 RBIs. Three other regular starters are hitting over .300, with RMU hitting .298 as a team.

SEASON AHEAD
Green Bay will play 40 Horizon League games this season, its most-ever scheduled. The HL season starts next weekend with the Phoenix taking a trip down to face Northern Kentucky for four games. GB will play its home-opener on March 19-20 against Robert Morris. GB was picked last in the Horizon League, after not playing a single HL game last season due to COVID-19 shutting the season down. That makes for extra motivation for GB in Sara Kubuske's second season.
