LAST MATCHUP
The Green Bay softball team dropped last weekend's series against IUPUI 2-1 after coming up short in an offensive slugfest against IUPUI at King Park last Friday, 8-7.
GB would tally their first run of the day in the bottom of the third when Aidyn Messman was gifted a five-pitch walk. Lauren Porter would draw another walk for another run, pulling the Phoenix within one. With the score at 3-2 in favor of IUPUI, and the bases loaded, Kelly Greene was scheduled to hit, but a rain delay would ensue, delaying the game for two hours and 55 minutes.
Green Bay kept the pressure on after the delay, notching two more runs in the bottom of the third and taking a 4-3 lead into the fourth inning. All four of Green Bay's runs were off of bases-loaded walks. IUPUI responded in the fifth inning when Kaisee Keyes blasted a leadoff home run to center, tying the game at seven. The Phoenix was held scoreless in the bottom half of the frame, and IUPUI retook the lead in the top of the sixth inning when Jenkins cracked an RBI single to left field, giving the Jaguars an 8-7 advantage. Green Bay put the tying run on base and brought the winning run to the plate twice in the seventh but fell short at 8-7.
ON THE SAME PAIGE
Freshman Paige Hanson has been a key piece in Green Bay's lineup this season, posting the team's second-highest batting average (.292) through 29 games played. One of eight true freshmen and 10 total newcomers, her 21 hits and eight RBIs rank fourth on the team.
DUCK DUCK GIESE
Outfielder Tiffany Giese has been swinging the bat well in 2023. She strung a 10-game hitting streak from February 26 to March 12, collecting 12 hits in 31 at-bats (.387 average). Giese is a perfect 9-for-9 in stolen bases so far and has pieced together another six-game hitting streak from March 16 to March 31, going 11-for-17 (.647). In GB's last series against IUPUI, she went 5-for-8 (.625). Her batting average (.333) leads the squad and is ninth in the Horizon League. Giese is also just six hits from breaking the Green Bay softball all-time hits record.
KRINGEL CRUSHIN' IT
Paeton Kringel is racking up innings for the Phoenix. She has tallied 20 and 2/3 innings in her last three outings (all starts), surrendering 11 earned runs in that span. Kringel, another freshman, showed out on March 24 against Robert Morris. Only nine of her 122 pitches left the infield that day, surrendering just three flyouts (compared to seven groundouts) and six base hits. Kringel rang up 11 Colonials and struck out the side in the first and second innings.
NEW PHOENIX FACES
Green Bay officially welcomed Mary Bean as an assistant coach on January 25. The Phoenix also welcomes 10 newcomers to the squad in 2023.
