Green Bay Drops Day Two Doubleheader at Mardi Gras Mambo

YOUNGSVILLE, La. – The Green Bay softball team dropped a pair of games at day two of the Mardi Gras Mambo on Friday. The Phoenix fell in game one to Nicholls State 11-1, followed up by a 6-1 loss to Eastern Illinois.

GAME 1 | NICHOLLS STATE 11, GREEN BAY 1
Nicholls State jumped out in front with three runs in the top of the first inning. GB responded and cut the lead to 3-1 after an RBI double from Aidyn Messmann. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Phoenix would get, as the Colonels went on to score eight unanswered runs before the fifth inning to finish the game in a run-rule.

Messman led the way offensively for the Phoenix, going 1-for-2 with and RBI in the ballgame. Paeton Kringel started and took the loss in the circle for Green Bay.

GAME NOTES
» Nicholls was led offensively by Reagen Heflin, who went 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBI.
» Audrey McNeill led the Colonels pitching staff, throwing four innings of one-run ball.
» Friday afternoon was the first ever meeting between the two programs.
» Sam Saloun drew a walk and scored the lone run on the Messmann double.

GAME 2 | EASTERN ILLINOIS 6, GREEN BAY 1
Steady offense was the key for the Panthers, as they put up runs in the first, second, fourth, and fifth innings. The Phoenix was able to cut into the lead somewhat in the sixth, when they got an RBI single from Saloun, scoring senior Hailey Heckenlaible from second base. Despite threatening in the top of the seventh, GB was unable to get any closer and the game ended 6-1.

Saloun and Paige Hanson led the way offensively for GB in game two. Saloun went 1-for-3 with the aforementioned RBI, while Hanson finished 2-for-3. Martha Miller started and took the loss in the circle for Green Bay. Ava Schill also pitched two innings in relief.

GAME NOTES
» Green Bay pitchers limited Eastern Illinois to just 2-for-10 (.200) with runners in scoring position.
» Heckenlaible and Lauren Porter each stole a base in game two.
» Eastern Illinois was led offensively by Avary Makarewicz, who went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
» McKenzie Oslanzi led the Panthers pitching staff, throwing six innings of one-run ball.
