ST. CHARLES, Mo. – It was a tough day in Missouri for the Green Bay softball team, as the Phoenix fell in back-to-back games to Lindenwood and Western Illinois. The Phoenix fell 4-1 to the Lions before dropping a close 5-4 contest to the Leathernecks.
GAME 1 | LINDENWOOD 4, GREEN BAY 1
Lindenwood got out in front early with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Phoenix responded with a run in the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI triple from Bella Herman that scored Marissa Destache.
GB was unfortunately unable to get any closer, as the Lions tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth to push the lead back out to three.
Martha Miller started and took the loss in the circle, going six innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on four hits, allowing three walks, and striking out five.
Offensively, Herman led the Phoenix, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a triple and an RBI.
GAME NOTES
» Lindenwood and Green Bay each ended the game with four hits.
» Sam Saloun and Aidyn Messmann were the other two Phoenix to register a hit.
» Avery Wapp led the Lions pitching staff, throwing seven innings of one-run ball.
GAME 2 | WESTERN ILLINOIS 5, GREEN BAY 4
Green Bay jumped out in front in game two, putting up three runs in the top of the second inning. Messmann started the scoring with an RBI single to right field. Viviana Guzman tacked on another with a sac fly to left field to score Madyson Baker. GB made it 3-0 with a Herman grounder to score Messmann.
Western Illinois responded immediately with four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-3 lead. The Leathernecks tacked another run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single to make it 5-3.
The Phoenix threatened late with a Saloun sac fly that scored Lauren Porter to cut the lead to 5-4. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Phoenix got, as WIU wrapped up the 5-4 win.
At the plate, the Phoenix was paced by Saloun, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kendal Herschbach had a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3.
GAME NOTES
» Green Bay went 3-for-8 (.375) with runners in scoring position.
» Western Illinois was led offensively by Maria Luna, who went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.
» Emily Price led the Leathernecks pitching staff, throwing five innings of four-run ball.
» WIU outhit GB 10-9.
COMING UP
Green Bay will look to bounce back and close out the weekend with a win against Western Illinois. First pitch for the game is slated for 10 a.m.
