GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay men's soccer team is moving on in the Horizon League Championships after knocking off No. 6 seed Oakland 2-0 in the Quarterfinals on Sunday. The win is the 500th in Green Bay Men's Soccer program history.
The Phoenix is set to face off against No. 2 seed Purdue Fort Wayne on the road for a spot in the Horizon League Championship against the winner of No. 1 seed Cleveland State and No. 5 seed Robert Morris. Both games will kick off on Wednesday, November 12, at 3 p.m. CST.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A miscommunication by an Oakland defender and goalkeeper led to an Oakland own goal scored in the 12th minute to give the Phoenix an early 1-0 lead. Oakland outshot Green Bay 6-5 in the first 45 minutes but had no goals to show for it.
Oakland goalkeeper Cole Thompson had a string of three consecutive saves off Green Bay shots on goal, ranging from the 52nd to the 59th minute. Phoenix goalkeeper
Drew Swancutt matched him and had an incredible save off a Mohammad Jamal Issa shot attempt in the 79th minute.
Chris Album then doubled Green Bay's lead in the 83rd minute, after finding
Noah Madrigal, who got it back to Album before he slotted it past the Golden Grizzlies' keeper.
