Phoenix Splits Doubleheader After Late Comeback Over Western Illinois

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Green Bay softball team split their Saturday doubleheader, falling to St. Thomas 10-0 before completing a 5-3 comeback win over Western Illinois.
 
GAME 1 | ST. THOMAS 10, GREEN BAY 0
St. Thomas put up four runs in the first inning of the game and never looked back, scoring four more in the second and two more in the third en route to a 10-0 run-rule win. Green Bay had two chances with runners in scoring position, but the Tommies' Ella Cook held the Phoenix to 0-for-2 in those situations.
 
Junior Paeton Kringel (0-1) started and took the loss in the circle for Green Bay (0-2). She was relieved by Megan Weiss, who pitched four innings and allowed four earned runs.
 
Kendal Herschbach and Paige Hanson went 1-for-2 to lead GB offensively.
 
GAME NOTES
» St. Thomas outhit GB 13-2.
» Herschbach led the Phoenix at the plate, going 1-for-2.
» Cook led the Tommies' pitching staff, throwing five shutout innings, striking out seven.
 
GAME 2 | GREEN BAY 5, WESTERN ILLINOIS 3
Western Illinois struck first by forcing a Phoenix error in the top of the first that scored a runner from second. GB responded and put runs on the board in the second inning and third innings. The second-inning run came off an RBI single from sophomore Viviana Guzman, followed up by a sacrifice fly from Aidyn Messmann in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
 
Green Bay's lead had disappeared by the time the seventh inning came around and turned into a 3-2 Western Illinois advantage. The Phoenix rallied in the top of the seventh and scored three runs thanks to RBI singles from Sara Ebner and Brooke Schwall, as well as a wild pitch that scored Paige Hanson.
 
Genesis Eggart closed out the Leathernecks in the bottom of the seventh to secure the GB victory. Eggart entered for Ava Schill in the bottom of the fifth and didn't allow a run in three innings pitched. She also got credit for the win, moving to 1-1 on the year.
 
GAME NOTES
» Bella Herman and Paige Hanson had multi-hit games.
» Jenna Redders stole two bases in Saturday's game.
» The Phoenix drew five walks from Western Illinois pitching.
» WIU slightly outhit GB 11-9.
» Herman led GB at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk.
 
COMING UP
GB will close out the weekend tomorrow with another doubleheader, starting with Valparaiso at 9 a.m. followed by DePaul at 11:30 a.m. Next weekend, the Phoenix will start the 2025 Aces Tournament hosted by Evansville with a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 14. GB will square off with Butler once again at noon before taking on Evansville at 5 p.m.
