GREEN BAY, Wis. – We're wrapping up the month of March with another edition of Phoenix Weekly, presented by Capital Credit Union.
WEEK IN REVIEW
SOFTBALL
The Green Bay softball team dropped a doubleheader in its home-opening action last Friday afternoon at King Park. GB fell 4-2 in game one before falling 8-2 in game two. Freshman Grace Kahr was the highlight of the day for Green Bay, combining to go 3-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI across the two games. Green Bay got on the board in the bottom of the fifth in game one when Kahr laid a perfect sacrifice bunt to bring in Paige Hanson, cutting Robert Morris' lead in half. The Colonials ended the remaining threat and added insurance in the seventh with an RBI single from Logan Black, followed by an RBI single from Kopf, making it 4-1 RMU. Emma Krueger scored for the Phoenix on a wild pitch, but the Phoenix came up short of completing a rally in the 4-2 loss. In game two,  Paige Hanson helped the Phoenix get on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the fourth inning, before Bella Herman ripped a triple to the right field corner, scoring Kahr to pull within three at 5-2. That's as close as GB would get, surrendering three more runs in the top of the seventh, falling 8-2.
Saturday's contest wrapped up the three-game series, starting as a pitcher's duel, with Green Bay's Genesis Eggart and RMU's Madison DeVault each pitching five no-hit innings. The first hit of the game came in the sixth inning when back-to-back doubles helped the Colonials take a 1-0 lead. The Phoenix also registered a hit when Sara Ebner singled in the bottom half of the sixth. RMU added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. However, the Phoenix responded with three runs of their own to force extra innings. Madyson Baker drove in the first run before Paige Hanson had a bases-loaded hit by pitch and Giannia Camacho had a bases-loaded walk. RMU scored once again in the top of the eighth and stopped the Phoenix from matching, securing the 4-3 win.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Phoenix women's basketball team fell to Alabama in the first round of the NCAA tournament this past Saturday, but the program has had a lot of exciting news in recent days. GB announced on March 14 the signing of former Green Bay Preble high school star Carley Duffney, who is transferring from South Dakota. On March 15, head coach Kayla Karius, who was the head coach at USD for two seasons before coming to Green Bay, inked a contract extension that will keep her in Titletown through the 2030-2031 season. Just a couple of days ago, the Green and White officially added Gracie Grzesk, a transfer from the Wisconsin Badgers. Grzesk was a three-time state champion on the girl's basketball team at Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay. Check out this story to read about the many ties her family has to Green Bay Basketball.
WOMEN'S GOLF
The Green Bay women's golf team opened the spring season strong at NKU's The Julie, finishing fourth out of 12 teams. The Phoenix ended 12 shots behind the tournament winners, Youngstown State. On day one, the Phoenix was led by a +5 round by Riley Pechinksi, followed by a +9 round from Jordan Shipshock. GB finished +35 in the first round as a team, putting themselves in a prime position, just two shots behind YSU. Green Bay was even better on day two with a +30 round but unfortunately fell to fourth place due to low rounds from Youngstown State, Lindenwood, and IU Indy. Frisch led the way in round two, shooting a +5 with Riley Pechinksi not far behind at +6. Shipshock shot a +9 in round two while Lexi Meade finished +10. The Phoenix is back in action April 4-5 against Western Illinois in Silvis, Illinois.
A LOOK AHEAD

Thursday features a doubleheader starting at noon, and both games will be broadcast on ESPN+. Friday's contest is slated for a noon first pitch. Green Bay will look to get on track against Oakland, having lost the last five meetings against the Golden Grizzlies. GB is also seeking its first Horizon League victory this season.
