CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Green Bay softball team opened their series against Cleveland State on Saturday, falling to the Vikings 5-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Phoenix put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning after an RBI double from Jenna Redders scored Kendal Herschbach.
The Vikings responded and scored five runs unanswered to take a 5-1 lead after three runs in the third and two more in the fifth.
Trailing 5-1, the Phoenix brought Bella Coulman across home after a Paige Hanson groundout. Unfortunately, that was as close as Green Bay got.
The Phoenix was led by Sara Ebner, who went 3-for-4 on the day. Redders went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.
Genesis Eggart started and took the loss in the circle for Green Bay (9-21, 2-11). The left-hander went 4.2 innings, giving up five runs, two earned, on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out five. Melissa Holzopfel got the win for CSU, pitching a complete game and allowing two runs on eight hits.

» Both teams finished with eight hits in the game.
» Green Bay pitchers limited Cleveland State to just 1-for-7 (.143) with runners in scoring position.
» Green Bay pitchers faced 30 Cleveland State hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and five fly balls while striking out six.
» Cleveland State was led offensively by Emma Gilkerson, who went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.

The two teams will continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. CT.
