Softball Downs Detroit Mercy 5-4, Completes Series Sweep

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay softball team completed a sweep of the Detroit Mercy Titans, winning game three of the series on Monday 5-4. With the win, the Phoenix now sits alone in the sixth spot of the Horizon League standings. If the season ended today, GB would qualify for the Horizon League Championships.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay opened up the scoring in a big way in the third inning. After a Kendal Herschbach single that scored Sara Ebner, Paige Hanson hit her first home run of the year, a three-run shot to take a 4-0 lead.

Detroit Mercy got their offense going in the fourth inning, scoring three runs and putting runners on second and third with no outs, which prompted Phoenix head coach Sara Kubuske to bring in Genesis Eggart. Eggart escaped the inning with minimal damage, allowing just the runner on third to score to tie the game at 4.

The Phoenix responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Emma Krueger, in a pinch-hit appearance, singled to left field to score Redders and take a 5-4 lead. Eggart shut down the Titans' offense the rest of the way to secure the GB win.

Eggart went three shutout innings without giving up a hit, walking two and striking out one.
Ebner's three-hit day led the Phoenix offensively. Hanson compiled a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Redders also helped out for Green Bay, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding two walks.
