Green Bay Drops Pair in Opening Day of Velvet Milkman Classic

MURRAY, Ky. - The Green Bay softball team dropped a pair of games on Thursday, losing to North Dakota 7-1 and Murray State 4-0 in their opening day at the Velvet Milkman Classic hosted by Murray State.

GAME 1 | North Dakota 7, Green Bay 1
Green Bay fell behind at the top of the second, going down 1-0. The Phoenix gave up two runs in the third and four in the fourth to fall behind 7-0. The Phoenix responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth but fell 7-1.

Morgan Kostecka (0-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Green Bay. She pitched 6.1 innings for GB, giving up two earned runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 7-0, Green Bay scored its lone run in the fifth. Gracie Anderson doubled and later came across to score on a Jenna Redders' double play ground ball that drove Anderson in.

GAME NOTES
» Green Bay pitchers faced 40 North Dakota hitters in the game, allowing 10 ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out two.
» Anderson led the Phoenix at the plate, going 1-for-1 with a double and a run scored. Katherine Filkowski and Emma Krueger had the other two Phoenix hits.
» North Dakota was led offensively by Makenna Alexander, who went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
» Tegan Livesay led the Fighting Hawks' pitching staff, throwing a complete game of seven innings and notching six strikeouts.
» UND outhit GB 7-3.
» Green Bay had two errors in the field to the Fighting Hawks' one.

GAME 2 | Murray State 4, Green Bay 0
After three scoreless innings to start, Murray State scored a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take control of the game 4-0, which would eventually be the final score.

Jasmine Trigueros (0-3) pitched 4.1 innings, giving up four runs for the Phoenix, and taking the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay had runners in scoring position in the first and second innings, but was unable to plate a run.

Adison Hicks hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Allie Waldron. Hicks later stole home to give the Racers a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Waldron hit a two-run double to expand Murray State's lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning. The Phoenix had two base runners in the final three innings, but couldn't find a hit to bring runs across.

GAME NOTES
» Sara Ebner led Green Bay, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
» Paeton Kringel pitched 1.2 innings of relief ball and struck out a pair of Racers while allowing no runs.
» Karlye Graber led Murray State's pitching staff, pitching 5.1 innings and striking out three Phoenix hitters.
» Murray State outhit Green Bay 8-5.

COMING UP
The Phoenix is back at it tomorrow at 10 a.m. when they take on South Dakota State, followed by a rematch with North Dakota at 12:30 p.m.
