DETROIT, Mich. – The Green Bay softball team split a pair of games on Saturday against the Detroit Mercy Titans, taking game one 5-0 before falling 2-0 in game two. The Titans won the series opener on Thursday and took the series two games to one.
GAME 1 | Green Bay 5, Detroit Mercy 0
Ava Schill was dealing in game one, hurling a two-hit shutout to lead the Phoenix past the Titans 5-0. Schill went the distance, walking two while striking out four.
At the plate, the Phoenix was led by Emily Jones, who went 1-for-1 on the day with a home run and four RBIs. Paige Guse compiled a standout performance at the dish as well, going 3-for-4 with a double. Brooke Schwall also contributed for Green Bay, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate, including a double, a walk, and an RBI.
The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, when Jones launched a pinch-hit grand slam to give GB a 4-0 lead. Schill shut down the Titans in the bottom half of the sixth before Schwall added another Phoenix run with an RBI double in the seventh, which was the last run scored in the game.
GAME NOTES
» The Phoenix out-hit the Titans at a 7-2 clip.
» Schill faced 25 Detroit Mercy hitters in the game, allowing 10 ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out four.
» Jones' home run is also the first hit of her young career.
GAME 2 | Detroit Mercy 2, Green Bay 0
Paeton Kringel (2-4) came out of the bullpen for Green Bay (11-24, 5-7) and took the loss. Viviana Guzman was a bright spot for the Phoenix, starting the ballgame and throwing three scoreless innings, allowing two hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.
At the plate, the Phoenix were paced by Gracie Anderson, who went 1-for-2 on the day with two walks. Emily Jones put together a standout effort as well, going 1-for-2 with a double.
Green Bay managed one chance with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. The Phoenix last got a runner on third in the fifth, when Anna Trimble made it 60 feet away from scoring with two outs.
Detroit Mercy got the scoring started in the fourth, putting up a run on a Savannah Schultz homer. Schultz doubled the Titans' lead in the fifth, driving in a run with a sac fly.

COMING UP
The Phoenix will continue its road trip next weekend when they head to Youngstown, Ohio, to take on Youngstown State. Game one will be on Friday at 2 p.m. CST before a Saturday doubleheader starting at Noon CST.
