Jones' Huge Day Leads Phoenix to Split at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Green Bay softball team split a pair of games on the road Friday against the Youngstown State Penguins, falling in game one 9-7 before winning 11-3 in five innings in game two.

GAME 1 | Youngstown State 9, Green Bay 7
The Phoenix got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Green Bay scored twice on a two-run double off the bat of Paige Guse.

The Penguins then rallied to score nine unanswered runs in the next four innings and took a 9-2 lead before the Phoenix got back on the board in the sixth. Green Bay scored three times, highlighted by back-to-back homers from Emily Jones and Sidney LaMotte, which tightened the Penguins' lead to 9-5.

Green Bay held the Penguins off the board before narrowing the gap to 9-7 in the seventh. The Phoenix picked up two runs when a single from Emma Krueger scored Jenna Redders and Gracie Anderson. The ballgame ended with that seventh-inning rally falling short.

Viviana Guzman (0-1) took the loss in the circle for Green Bay. Paeton Kringel started the ballgame and went 4.2 innings, surrendering two runs, both earned, on four hits, walking one, and striking out one.

In the batter's box, the Phoenix were led by Guse, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Jones mashed a two-run home run in the sixth inning, and LaMotte helped out by adding a solo home run immediately afterwards.

GAME NOTES
» Green Bay got multiple extra-base hits from both Guse and Anderson.
» Green Bay went 3-for-7 (.429) with runners in scoring position.
» Green Bay pitchers faced 36 Youngstown State hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out one.
» Youngstown State was led offensively by Kennedy Dean, who went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, and two RBIs.

GAME 2 | Green Bay 11, Youngstown State 3
Emily Jones continued her amazing stretch in game two, collecting four RBIs to help propel the Green Bay Phoenix over the Youngstown State Penguins 11-3 in game two.
The Phoenix got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Green Bay plated two runs when Jones left the yard with Anderson aboard.

The Penguins failed to push any runs across before the Phoenix offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Green Bay picked up two runs when a single from Jones scored Sara Ebner and Anderson, which brought the score to 4-0 in favor of the Phoenix.

Green Bay held Youngstown State scoreless before building its lead to 7-0 in the following inning. The Phoenix scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer off the bat of Krueger that scored LaMotte and Guse.

Green Bay kept the Penguins scoreless before their offense got things rolling again in the next inning. The Phoenix pushed across two runs when a single from Guse scored Anderson and Grace Kahr, bringing the Green Bay advantage to 9-0.

The Phoenix kept Youngstown State off the board before building on their lead to 11-0 in the fifth. Green Bay managed to push across two runs in the inning. Youngstown State put three runs on the scoreboard, but that wasn't enough to extend the game as it ended in a run-rule.

Ava Schill (5-5) got the win for the Phoenix in the circle. The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing three walks and striking out three.

Jones went 3-for-4 with a home run in addition to her four RBIs for the Phoenix. Krueger furnished a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Anderson also contributed for Green Bay, putting together two hits in two trips to the plate while adding two walks and an RBI.

GAME NOTES
» Jones had three hits and four RBIs in the game for Green Bay and now has 10 runs batted in for GB in the last three games.
» Green Bay never trailed in game two.
» Four Phoenix had multiple hits in the ballgame.
» The Phoenix out-hit the Penguins at an 11-6 clip.
