GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay women's soccer team successfully defended their undefeated record with a 1-0 shutout victory over Oakland on Sunday at Aldo Santaga Stadium. The win moves Green Bay's record to 8-0-2 overall and 3-0 in Horizon League action.
"I am very proud of the group today," said head coach Matt Kagan. "I thought we imposed ourselves on the game from the beginning. We generated multiple opportunities to score, which is an area we need to continue to train. I'm glad we got the goal from Laney in the second half after great buildup, and then we were able to shut the game down!"
HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay fired eight shots in the first half, but all were off target, keeping the score 0-0 at halftime. Oakland didn't register a shot in the first half.
After a shot by Allie Billingsly was blocked, the ball lay in the middle of the six-yard box, where it was pounced on by Laney Stark, who slotted it into the Golden Grizzlies net in the 69th minute. Stark's fourth goal of the season was the lone goal scored all day, as GB cruised to the win.
GAME NOTES
- Oakland registered neither a shot nor a corner kick in the match.
- GB had eight corner kicks.
- The Golden Grizzlies had seven fouls to the Phoenix's five.
- Stark's fourth goal of the year moves her into the team lead.
- The Phoenix are 3-0 in conference play for the first time since joining the Horizon League.
