Phoenix Student-Athletes Well Represented on Winter All-Academic Teams

April 29, 2009

INDIANAPOLIS - Green Bay Athletics continued to demonstrate its strength both in competition and in the classroom Wednesday as eleven Phoenix student-athletes gained Winter Academic All-Horizon League team honors. Green Bay, which does not participate in two of the league's six winter sports (men's and women's track and field), ranked second-best among the 10 league schools, as Valparaiso led with 16 selections.

The Phoenix men's swimming and diving squad had the most individual selections of any Horizon League team, as five received honors. Two juniors, Jordan Mathes (Kiel, Wis.) and Travis Mathers (Baraboo, Wis.), were each honored for the second straight year, while junior Brendan Reilly (Wayzata, Minn.) and sophomores Dustin Dietrich (Kiel, Wis.) and Ryan Loy (New London, Wis.) were first-time honorees.

Women's swimming and diving also had a strong showing, tallying three award winners. Sophomores Katelyn Bodin (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Christine Spading (Andover, Minn.) were first-time recipients, while junior Allison Thut (Green Bay, Wis.) was recognized for the second year in a row.

Men's basketball seniors Mike Schachtner (Somerset, Wis.) and Ryan Tillema (Randolph, Wis.) were each named to the list, marking the third consecutive year for Schachtner, while Tillema gained his first academic all-league recognition.

Senior Erin Templin (Richland Center, Wis.) of the Green Bay women's basketball team gathered her first-ever academic all-league honors to round out the list for the Phoenix.

A total of 76 student-athletes from six winter sports were honored in balloting by the League's faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors from among more than 155 nominations. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
