MADISON, Wis. - The Green Bay men's tennis team (0-1) suffered
a 5-1 loss at the hands of the 32nd-ranked Wisconsin Badgers (3-0) Saturday
night in the squad's season opener. The teams did not compete in doubles at the
event, which was held at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) was the lone winner for
the Phoenix, as he took the No. 3 singles match over Patrick Pohlmann in a
tiebreaker. Swanson won the opening set by a 6-3 result, fell by the same score
in the second, and then posted a 10-2 victory in the tiebreaker for the win.
Green Bay's other three most competitive matches came at
Nos. 4-6, including at No. 6, where newcomer Gilles Cornelis (Antwerpen,
Belgium) lost by a 6-2, 6-3 count.
Green Bay returns to action Sunday at 3 p.m. against Western
Illinois at Western Racquet and Fitness Club.
