GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's and women's swimming and diving teams each
picked up their first dual meet victories of the 2010-11 season Saturday
afternoon, defeating Horizon League rival Wright State at the Dorschel
Natatorium. Both teams improve to 1-1 on the young season, as the women's squad
won 184.5-113.5, while the men's team earned a 171-129 win.
The Green Bay women earned wins
in nine of the meet's 16 events, while the Phoenix recorded eight first-place
finishes on the men's side. For the Phoenix men, the victory marked the
program's first ever win over Wright State.
"I was very happy with how the
guys performed today," Phoenix head coach Jim Merner said. "They swam
hard, raced well and competed well on the diving boards. It was our first win
over Wright State in about 17 years, so I couldn't be happier for them."
Leading the way for the Phoenix
men was senior Jason Askew (Durban, South Africa), who placed first in
the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events. Askew took the 100 in 58.63
seconds and the 200 in 2:11.47.
The Phoenix men took both of
the diving events, as junior Daniel Pogue (Chisholm, Minn.), the
reigning Horizon League Diver of the Week, won the 1-meter competition with an
impressive score of 324.15. Sophomore teammate Mitchell Spaeth
(Fredonia, Wis.) took the 3-meter event with a score of 291.53.
Junior Amy Burback
(Waunakee, Wis.) picked up a pair of wins on Saturday for the Phoenix women,
taking the 100 (1:06.37) and 200-yard (2:23.59) breaststroke events. Freshman Kendra
Rottier (Green Bay, Wis.) also won twice for the women's squad, taking the
200 butterfly in 2:08.51 and the 500 freestyle in 5:07.25.
"We showed our depth again today
on the women's side," Merner said. "We had some really nice races by some of
the younger people and I was really proud of the way our whole team competed."
Green Bay continues its season with back-to-back road dual meets
next weekend. The Phoenix men and women travel to South Dakota State on Friday
for a 6 p.m. meet, then to South Dakota on Saturday for a 10 a.m. start.
