MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Green Bay men's tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 4-3 victory over IUPUI Sunday in Milwaukee. With the match all square at three apiece, Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) picked up the clinching victory for the Phoenix, which needed to win four of six singles matches after dropping the doubles point.
"Paul is great competitor and anytime he's out on the court I feel good about our chances," head coach Mark Thomas said. "I am proud of our guys for finding a way to win today even though we didn't play great tennis."
Swanson's victory over Dan Klingenberg came in a couple of tight sets, as he won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
The lone two-time winner for the Phoenix was Fabian Gogolin (Cologne, Germany), who defeated Deon Shafer 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) in the top singles spot and teamed with Henning Jess (Kaltenkirchen, Germany) for a 9-8 (7-3) triumph at No. 1 singles.
Green Bay also picked up the win at No. 3 singles to sweep the top three spots as Matt Clegg (Stevens Point, Wis.) dominated his match by a 6-1, 6-1 final. The fourth Green Bay win came via Marko Skoric (Zagreb, Croatia), who grabbed a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win at No. 5.
"We had a really slow start in doubles today, but turned it around in most of our singles matches," Thomas said. "IUPUI played with great intensity from the first point and fought hard in every match. Credit the IUPUI coaches and players for a match well played."
The Phoenix returns to action Friday and Saturday with matches at Western Michigan and DePaul.
