CHICAGO - The Green Bay women's swimming and diving team won
its sixth straight conference crown Saturday night at the 2010 Horizon League
Championships at the Flames Natatorium on the campus of UIC. It marked the
program's eighth title in the last 13 years. The Phoenix totaled 804 points
over the four day event to finish 91 points ahead of second place Milwaukee.
The Green Bay men earned a fifth place finish for the third straight season,
scoring 551 points.
Three from Green Bay earned Horizon League honors at the
meet, as senior Lauren McGraw (Woodbury, Minn.) was named the Women's Diver of
the Meet, Tom Stover garnered both the Men's and Women's Diving Coach of the
Year awards and Jim Merner was honored as the Horizon League Women's Swimming
Coach of the Year.
McGraw's award was the second of her career, as she also
earned Diver of the Meet honors as a sophomore in 2008. On Saturday, the senior
edged Milwaukee junior Kelsey George to win the 3-meter board with a score of
272.95 after winning the 1-meter event in record-breaking fashion on Thursday.
Stover's dual honors marked the third and fourth of his
career, as he won the award on the men's side a year ago and on the women's
side in 2008. Merner's award was the 10th of his career and sixth in a row.
Senior Renee Reindl (Pewaukee, Wis.) registered a new
school record in the 200 breaststroke on Saturday, finishing in 2:20.96, while junior
Alyssa Danielson (Rogers, Minn.) earned a runner-up finish in 51.32 in the 100
free. Reindl's time broke the previous record of 2:20.08 set by Allison Kreb in
2006.
Freshman Melissa Killpatrick (Elk River, Minn.) had a
strong showing in the 1650-yard freestyle, finishing in third with a time of 17:06.15.
The time broke Molly Cox's 2005 school record of 17:15.46.
For the Phoenix men, junior Jason Askew (Durban,
South Africa) broke Matt Schoen's 2003 record of 2:05.18 in the 200
breaststroke, finishing with a time of 2:05.01.
Between the Green Bay men's and women's teams, a total of 11 school records were broken over the four days in Chicago. The women's squad saw seven new records set, while four were broken on the men's side.
