MILWAUKEE - The Green Bay men's tennis team (8-5) concluded
a busy month by downing Eastern Illinois by a 5-2 final on Sunday. The Phoenix
took the top four singles spots in the match to bounce back after dropping the
doubles point.
The first three singles players earned straight-set
triumphs, as Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win at No.
1 singles, Fabian Gogolin (Cologne, Germany) won 6-2, 6-4 in the two line and
Matt Clegg secured a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 3.
Henning Jess (Kaltenkirchen, Germany) earned a hard-fought
three-set win (4-6, 7-6, 6-3), recovering from a third-set 3-0 deficit to win
the final six games. The Phoenix also picked up a win at No. 6, when Marko Skoric (Zagreb, Croatia) won 7-6, 6-1.
"After a slow start in doubles, we
played very well in singles," head coach Mark Thomas said. "I was extremely
impressed by Paul Swanson's straight set win over (Jeffrey) Rutherford and
Henning Jess' 3-set victory after being down 3-0 in the 3rd set."
Skoric and Clegg teamed up at No. 2 doubles to pick up the
lone Green Bay doubles win (8-4).
Green Bay was playing its 13th match since
opening the season on Jan. 23. The Phoenix is now off until March 20, when it
begins league play at home against Valparaiso.
