GREEN BAY,
Wis. - Green Bay stayed hot, rolling to its fifth consecutive victory, by
dispatching UIC by a 5-2 final Sunday morning in men's tennis action at Western
Racquet and Fitness Center. The Phoenix has now won eight of its past nine
matches and is 2-0 in Horizon League play.
Paul Swanson
(Coon Rapids, Minn.) highlighted the day, winning at No. 1 singles over
Sebastian Lystad, an all-conference performer a year ago. Swanson bounced back
from a first-set loss to earn a three-set win (3-6, 7-5, 6-0) that included a
whitewashing in the final stanza.
Green Bay
also took the final three singles spots, which included a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5
by Henning Jess (Kaltenkirchen, Germany). Swanson and Jess also teamed at No. 3
doubles to grab an easy 8-1 win and help the Phoenix secure the doubles point.
The Phoenix
also claimed a two-set win in the six line, as Marko Skoric (Zagreb, Croatia)
was victorious by a 7-5, 6-2 score. Matt Clegg (Stevens Point, Wis.) was the
other singles winner for Green Bay, as he won a three-setter (6-3, 4-6, 6-1) at
No. 4.
"Our
guys really stepped up to the challenge today," head coach Mark Thomas said. "UIC
is a team that lost 4-3 in the conference final last year and also beat us 7-0.
I am very proud of the way we played. This is a big win for our program."
Green Bay
continues its season Saturday at Cleveland State.
