GREEN BAY,
Wis. - The Green Bay men's tennis team defeated Horizon League foe Detroit by a
4-3 final Friday to cap an unblemished 6-0 home slate this season. The Phoenix,
which completed the regular season with a 12-8 overall record, went 4-3 in
conference play.
After
dropping all three doubles matches, Green Bay regrouped in singles, as the Phoenix
won four of the six spots.
"I am really
proud of the way we finished our conference season today at home," head coach Mark Thomas said. "We were undefeated at home the entire year and the streak
continued today. The guys competed hard top to bottom for each point, and
that's what it takes to win matches in a more challenging and deeper Horizon
League this year."
Matt Clegg
(Stevens Point, Wis.), the team's lone senior, picked up an impressive 6-4, 6-3
win at No. 2 singles. It was his 45th career dual-match win in
singles play.
The bottom
of the Phoenix order took over to give Green Bay the victory. At No. 4, Josh Oothoudt (Minot, N.D.) secured a 6-4, 7-5 victory, while Marko Skoric (Zagreb,
Croatia) also had a straight sets win (6-3, 6-3) at No. 6. The pivotal match
was Henning Jess' (Kaltenkirchen, Germany) three-set triumph in the five line,
as he posted a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory.
"It was great to get a win on Matt Clegg's
senior day," Thomas said. "Matt has enjoyed a great career for the Phoenix."
Green Bay
will now compete in the Horizon League Championships April 23-25 in
Indianapolis, Ind.
