INDIANAPOLIS - The fifth-seeded Green Bay men's tennis team fell
by a 4-1 count to fourth-seeded Butler Friday in the first round of the 2010
Horizon League Championships. The match was played indoors as rain forced day
one of the competition to indoor courts.
Matt Clegg (Stevens Point, Wis.), at No. 2 singles, was the lone point scorer
for the Phoenix. He easily defeated Chris Herron in straight sets by a 6-2, 6-4
count.
Clegg also teamed with Fabian Gogolin (Cologne, Germany) to
pick up an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles. The Bulldogs took the second and third
spots by 8-4 and 8-2 counts, however, to earn the doubles point.
After grabbing the doubles point, the Bulldogs clinched the
victory with singles wins at No. 3, 4 and 6.
Green Bay will play Detroit at 8 a.m. Saturday in the
fifth-place match.
