GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - For the 15th
time in his Phoenix career, senior diver Daniel Pogue (Chisholm, Minn.)
has been tabbed as the Horizon League Men's Diver of the Week for the period of
Nov. 28-Dec. 4, the conference office announced on Monday. Pogue shattered the
Green Bay school record in the 1-meter diving event Saturday at the Iowa
Hawkeye Invitational to earn his third weekly award of the season.
After placing fourth in
the 3-meter event on Friday with a score of 307.80, Pogue turned in the best
performance of his storied career on the 1-meter board on Saturday, breaking
his own school record with a gigantic score of 366.15. The score snapped his
mark of 339.90 from a season ago and earned him a second-place finish in a
strong field of divers.
"The
whole field of eight divers was on fire in the final round Saturday
evening," Phoenix diving coach Tom Stover said. "Danny's last
dive was near perfect, with some of the Big Ten judges awarding him nines. He
scored 67 points on that last dive alone, which vaulted him into second place
in a very tough and veteran field of divers.
"I
have seen Danny perform like this, but not on this big of a stage and under
this kind of extreme pressure," Stover said. "He has put in the work necessary
for this, so it was doubly satisfying for us to see him enjoy this outcome. It
was absolutely a phenomenal performance."
Pogue and the Phoenix
swimming and diving squads will return home to the Peter F. Dorschel Natatorium
this weekend when they host Horizon League opponent Valparaiso on Saturday at 2
p.m.
