DETROIT, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The No.
14/12 Green Bay (14-0, 4-0 HL) women's basketball team wraps up its three game
Horizon League road stretch at Detroit (8-9, 4-1 HL) Saturday at 1 p.m. CT at
Calihan Hall. With a win over the Titans, Green Bay would set a new program
record with 35 consecutive regular season wins.
Green Bay enters
the contest as one of two unbeaten teams in the country, including Baylor. The
Phoenix is fourth in the nation in turnover margin (8.36) and ranks seventh in
field-goal percentage (47.8) and assists per game (18.2).
Green Bay is
coming off a 68-50 win over Wright State while the Titans enter the contest
following a dominant 71-48 win over Milwaukee on Thursday. Senior Julie Wojta
(Francis Creek, Wis.) posted her eighth double double of the season in the
Phoenix win, pouring in a game-high 22 points while grabbing a career and
game-high 17 rebounds. Yar Shayok led the Titans with a double double
performance against the Panthers, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds while
chipping in 10 points. Detroit's Senee Shearer led all scorers with 20 points.
Saturday's contest
will feature two of the top three shooters in the conference in Wojta and
Detroit's Shareta Brown. Both are the reigning Horizon League Co-Players of the
Week. Brown is second in the league shooting 56.1 percent from the field while
Wojta is third shooting 55.2 percent.
LEADING THE WAY... Wojta continues to dominate with her play while
setting career records. Averaging a league-best 20.4 points per game and
second-best 10.1 boards per contest, Wojta is second in the nation with an
average of 4.2 steals per game. After grabbing a Horizon League and program
record 12 steals in Green Bay's win over Milwaukee Jan. 7, the senior captain
grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds at Wright State, 14 on the defensive end.
Freshman Shareta Brown is pacing Detroit with an average of 15.6 points
and 8.3 rebounds per contest. The 6-foot forward scored 12 points in 18 minutes
of play in the Titans win over Milwaukee, one of three players to post double
digit scoring.
THE SERIES... Green Bay owns an overall record of 34-6 over the
Titans and 12-5 record at Detroit. The Phoenix has won the last two meetings
against Detroit by an average of 13.5 points per game.
LAST MEETING... In a tough-fought battle, Green Bay wrapped up Horizon
League play with a perfect 18-0 record for the second time in three seasons
under head coach Matt Bollant with a 68-48 win over Detroit at Calihan Hall.
There were eight lead changes throughout the first 16 minutes of play. Neither
team led by more than four points until 4:14 remaining in the first half. Green
Bay's defense held Detroit to eight points throughout the final 14:48 of the
game while shooting 23 percent from the field.
